Yet another really
beautiful forest Kingfisher that is difficult to see. Its call
was heard deep in the forests of northern Malaysia in Kedah State.
This proved to be most difficult to photograph and I had seen
it, inquisitive of our presence I suppose, perch once before
on this branch. Through a very narrow "opening" in
the forest, I managed to aim my lens at this spot hoping for
it to return. It remarkably did so only once, but for less than
15 seconds, and was gone!
However, in September,
2011, I was presented a 70th birthday gift by Mother Nature when
a male Rufous-collared Kingfisher was seen by Jody Tang on a
branch at eye-level and very close. This bird was not bothered
by us whatsoever and gave us a breath-taking 30 minutes or so
of wonderful photos.
