We were treated
to a nesting Common Nighthawk this summer (2009) and a few of
us were able to photograph, after almost daily vigilance, the
chick soon after hatching. The hatchling was at the same spot
for about 5 days and was observed to move some inches from its
original nesting spot. We only saw the female incubating and
at the nest-site during the day. Several of my friends saw the
male appear after dark, and feed the chick.
The second photo
was taken a year later (2010) of probably the same bird with
another successful brood of two chicks. Look carefully and you
will see three sets of eyes!
