This page showcases
my growing collection of Kingfishers from Bali, North America,
Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. It is easy to see why these
very colourful birds with their distinctively large bills have
quickly become favourites of mine. The Belted Kingfisher is found
only in North America and is a large bird. Most Kingfishers feed
on fish and crustaceans, but a few do not rely on such food finding
small reptiles and insects more than fill their needs. There
is one very common behaviour that all of these birds show, and
that is they are extremely skittish!
I was able to
add two more species to this collection in February and March,
2009 in Malaysia and Singapore. These are the Black-backed and
Rufous-collared Kingfishers. I am now lacking the very elusive
Blue-eared and Blue-banded Kingfishers, as well as the Brown-winged
Kingfisher, which is found on Langkawi Island and Andaman Sea
only, to complete the series of South-east Asia, and Bali Kingfishers.
A photographic
trip to South Texas in late April, 2009 in the hopes of seeing
the Green Kingfisher was a very lucky and successful one. North
America has three Kingfishers, Belted, Green and Ringed. You
can see all three only in South Texas near the Mexican border.
The Ringed is the largest of the three and should have been much
easier to locate, but it was never spotted.
