The main target
was to see and capture images of the very endangered Spoonbilled
Sandpiper (Calidris pygmeus), and Guide Panuwat ("Par")
Sasirat more than delivered! The other four on the "List"
were the Black-capped Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher, Blue Pitta
and Blue-bearded Bee-eater. It turned out to be the most successful
8 days I have ever spent photographing birds - 52 species recorded
on camera and 21 "lifers". Often we were at locations
well before daybreak. Here are some of the Birds of Thailand
captured at Khao Yai National Park, Phetchaburi, Khao Sam Roi
Yod National Park and Cha Am Forest Park Services Office public
park.
This third visit
included a much longer stay at Khao Yai National Park, where
birds seem abundant at the beginning of the year. Once again,
I had many "Lifers", including the Heart-spotted Woodpecker,
Moustached Barbet, Asian Barred and Spotted Owlets, White-browed
Crake and Red Avadavat. The Spoonbilled Sandpiper was again seen
and a much closer approach was made. There were reports of 12
being seen this year at the Pak Thale Salt Pans, and a huge flock
of 84 birds were reported in Burma.
